The Foundation

Today this center exists and operates: it is the Candiolo Cancer Institute – IRCCS.

To achieve its mission, the Foundation undertakes to complete the construction of the Institute and to equip it with the best technologies available on the market.

It also directly manages oncological research activities and promotes study projects related to it which, in connection with the activities carried out nationally and internationally, lead to an expansion of the knowledge of the scientific community and the improvement of the quality of life of those affected.

The Foundation takes care of directly finding the economic resources necessary to achieve its goals, through structured fundraising activities, and organizes all the initiatives and events necessary to achieve this goal.

Our history

The story of Candiolo Cancer Institute – IRCCS begins in 1986: determined to do something concrete for cancer research, Allegra Agnelli involves some illustrious oncologists with the aim of remedying the chronic lack of funds for research and create a center of excellence that is open and accessible to all.

On June 19, 1986, the Fondazione Piemontese per la Ricerca sul Cancro on the Cancer, which in 2021 celebrated 35 years of activity: a great achievement, made up of commitment, passion and perseverance.

1992 is the year of laying the first stone and in which it begins to be
concrete and visible the project. Today, more than thirty years later, the Institute covers a total of 56,500 m2, of which 47,962 m2 for clinical use and 8,538 m2 for research.

Since 1994, the Institute has been cooperating with the University of Turin which conducts scientific research and teaching activities with the most prestigious national and international institutions. The link between research and clinic is the heart of the Foundation’s project.

The research activity began in 1996. Over time it grew in professionalism, spaces and instruments thanks to the generosity of hundreds of thousands of private supporters, who financed it in recent years.

In 1997, the first spaces dedicated to care became operational
to assistance. It is a great collective commitment, which began with the birth of the Foundation and continued with the laying of the first stone of the oncological center in Candiolo, which still continues with the expansion of the Institute.

In 2010, the three new floors of the second hospital tower were activated for the reception of patients. The new spaces add up to the three floors of the first tower, bringing the area dedicated to clinical activity to a total of 6,600 m2.

The Candiolo Cancer Institute – IRCCS is a private cancer center and is the only Scientific Hospitalization and Treatment Institute in Piedmont, recognized in 2013 by the Ministry of Health, by virtue of the important discoveries made and published in the most prestigious international scientific journals.

In the autumn of 2014, the construction works of the second Tower dedicated to Research ended. The Candiolo Cancer Institute – IRCCS thus assumes its definitive form envisaged by the project started in 1992.

Thirty years of work. Thirty demanding, sometimes difficult, but also extraordinary years. In this period, thanks to the immense generosity of our supporters, we have been able to fulfill a dream: to equip Turin and Piedmont with an internationally avant-garde cancer center.

In 2021 the Foundation celebrates 35 years of activity. Ours is one
unique history: Candiolo is a center created by people for people. And the path we traced in 1986 is the same one that allows us to design our future today.

Moving forward with determination is our duty: it means supporting
not only treatment and research on cancer but also the works of Cantiere Candiolo.

In the coming years, with your help, new spaces will be created for
welcome patients and for the study and application of increasingly advanced therapies.
